Patients today find things by looking online. You can learn a lot about an office by what they show you online. Since most of my clients are pediatricians and the key demographic they want to attract is young parents, a good website starts with good design.
Let’s start with the general design. Is it modern? There is a definite “look” to the modern website. See fitbit.com , starbucks.com and barkbox.com to see what I mean. You should focus on a good color palette and a strong image. Many clients start with too many pictures, boxes and colors.
Now let’s talk font. Pediatricians love to use comic sans. It is simply too dated – if you only make one change, please retire comic sans.
Next consider how the information is organized. See the examples above – there are clear menus to get to information. You can have the best content ever provided in the history of doctor’s offices, but most patients won’t spend much time looking around if they struggle to understand your menus.
Finally, it MUST be optimized for mobile viewing. A regular old website on a cell phone just doesn’t work. Check out this example from NFL.com. You can see it is difficult to navigate the regular site from a mobile device.
These days there are a lot of ways to update your website economically. There are a lot of sites out there that cater to doctors, but they charge such high premiums and I don’t think they are worth it. Find a good designer who uses wix.com, squarespace.com or wordpress.com and they will make sure your website shows the sophistication and professionalism you are looking for.
