Price of Newborn Screens Set to Rise in January

The price of newborn screening tests for the Texas Department of Health is set to rise on January 1, 2020. The new fee will be $60.58 for all kits ordered after that date. The increase is due to the addition of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) to the panel.

It will likely take some time before payers start paying more for these. To ensure you are collecting all you should, be sure to code 82016 AND 82018 IN ADDITION TO XXXXX and use modifier 32 on all 3 codes.

Finally, set the expectation with your billing team that these are NEVER written off. They are too expensive to not be paid for.
